Plan FAQ’s

Here you will find explanations on what each service is about, how they benefit you and why you might need them. Please contact me if you have any questions!

What it means:

WordPress is a platform for your blog or website (if you are indeed using WordPress). You can think of it like Microsoft Windows. Within Windows you have programs installed that allow you to do different tasks. Within WordPress, you also have what are called plugins and your main theme. Your theme is the template of your website or blog…it is what your website is designed to look like. Plugins are small programs which can do a variety of things. They range from things like this FAQ page to eCommerce which allows you to sell products to SEO optimization and many things in between.

How it benefits you:

Google gives priority to WordPress websites which means if someone uses keywords found in your site, the chances are, you will show up higher in the search results than a non-WordPress site. This means more traffic and potential sales for your business!

Keeping the site patched and updated can prevent unnecessary downtime which can cost you money and potential customers.

Why you need it:

All of these aspects of your site or blog require updates from time to time. There is no particular time frame in which updates occur. At any given time you can look at your dashboard and see a number next to ‘Plugins’ which means there is an update waiting to be applied.

Sometimes updates fix minor issues or authors have added a new feature. In some cases, major bugs and security issues have been updated that could put your site at risk if they remain unpatched. The problem with updating plugins if you are not familiar with WordPress is that you may have incompatibility issues with your theme or WordPress itself. This can result in that particular plugin not working correctly, or at ALL. The last thing you want is downtime, especially if you run an eCommerce site. A backup should always be done before applying updates and ultimately, the site should be tested after each individual update takes place so you know it still works. Theme and plugin authors will need to update their programs when WordPress does a major update since this is the backbone of the platform. Not everyone does this in a timely manner (and sometimes not at all).

Therefore, you should either know how to deal with the myriad of updates that are thrown at you multiple times per month or risk even further downtime while someone else tries to fix whatever went wrong. I have had years of experience with updates and know how to deal with problems which can sometimes involve having to find a replacement for a plugin or theme if it comes down to that.

With that being said, there is no definitive time that it takes to do these updates. Typically they go smoothly without any problems, but once you start talking about theme and WordPress updates, they can take longer depending on the complexity of your site. On the short side of the time frame, a monthly check for updates can take 30-45 minutes along with testing. On the other hand, if something goes wrong or a restore has to be done, it could take in upwards of a few hours. Should you have purchased the Basic plan which allows for 2 hours of service time and the updates take longer than 2 hours, you will not be billed for the extra time. That also goes for any other plan purchased. My loss is your gain as far as time is concerned!

What it is:

Your website has a few different types of backups that need to be done in case something goes drastically wrong with it. It’s essential that you have a backup housed somewhere safe. It’s not unheard of for servers to crash and if the hosting provider hasn’t done a good job of making sure their servers were backed up, you could lose your entire site. It’s always best to make sure you have done a backup yourself so you know for SURE it’s always available…just in case!

How it benefits you:

Backups are insurance. You wouldn’t think about taking your car out on the busy highway without insurance, would you? If updating or installing a new plugin goes wrong, it can sometimes take your site offline…even preventing the admin from accessing the login page to fix it! Restoring a backup takes about 3-5 minutes and then you’re back online. It’s a necessity you don’t want to do without.

Why you need it:

We’ve all been in the situation before (usually with an important file or email) where you accidentally deleted something and you didn’t make a backup. Creating backups after you do updates to the site is also important so you have revision history. You wouldn’t want to just backup your site right after it was designed then forget about it. There will always be changes made to it so it’s ideal to back up after each change to save you work in the future, should something go wrong.

With your monthly plan, I will do a backup for you before I update anything. Once plugins and other updates are applied and tested, I will do a second backup as well. I will set up a Dropbox account just for you so that your backups are kept ‘in the cloud’ and I will also create a local backup which is stored on an external drive.

What it is:

Everyone has seen them at some point, either on Pinterest, Facebook or just about any store that does advertising. Those nice graphics with a bit of text on them describing what they’re selling or a message they want to get across.

How it benefits you:

By keeping up with trends and creating something eye catching, more people will be interested in your business. This means more traffic to your site and potential customers! Who doesn’t want that?

Why you need it:

People love looking at pictures and don’t like reading paragraphs of information. Short and sweet describes it and info graphics do just that. I’ll make you some during the month to promote whatever you’d like, to post wherever you’d like. If you have a brick and mortar shop, they can even be sent to the printer for flyers or posters!

What it is:

Photos are the lifeblood of a website. If you went to a site and the first thing you saw was a blurry image or one that was chopped off, how likely are you to stay there? Probably not long. It just doesn’t look professional and it’s hard to take a website seriously if they didn’t bother trying to make it look good. It can make or break you. Image optimization means that an image is scaled correctly while still maintaining the quality but also making sure it isn’t so large that your site loads slowly.

How it benefits you:

If your site takes longer than 4 or 5 seconds to load, most people will abandon it and probably never come back. Making sure your site loads quickly means keeping people there and leads to a higher percentage of sales.

Why you need it:

Nowadays, slider images are the first thing you see splashed across the entire screen of a website. These can be very hard for the novice designer to fit properly because it’s not a typical size that cameras shoot in. Often they get cropped at the top or bottom and can’t fit exactly so it ends up looking amateurish. You also don’t want huge file sizes if you’re scrolling through 4-5 carousel images on the homepage (or ANY page, for that matter). This slows down your site and could cause the viewer to abandon it simply because it’s taking too long to load. You also don’t want to make a picture larger than it is because pixelation occurs which causes it to look blurry and it loses its vividness. Sometimes you just have to settle for a different photo altogether because of it.

I have Photoshop which is essential for making images for the web and properly scaling them to fit predefined areas. I am offering optimization for up to 10 photos for the Executive plan and up to 20 for the Power User plan should you need it for any site on the internet you choose (website, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.).

What it is:

Most people will have links in their website, whether it’s an internal link to other pages or external links to other websites. They will also have at least one contact form which lets the user interact with the owner by sending them a message without having to go through their email client in order to do so. These should be tested at least monthly to make sure the website is operating as it should.

How it benefits you:

By making sure your links work adds credibility to your site. There’s nothing worse than clicking on a link you want to see and seeing a 404 error page stating it can’t be found. I usually leave the site if that happens to me. Testing your contact form is essential if you want customers. A lot of people test the contact form method before doing business with you to see what your response time is. Take more than a day to answer it, you can bet you won’t get their business. Keeping these simple things in working order ensures happy customers and more sales for you!

Why you need it:

I’m sure you’ve clicked on a link at some point only to get an error saying it was no longer found or it ends up leading you to a different page altogether that had nothing to do with the link at all. It’s beyond frustrating and creates a bad user experience, which nobody wants. It can lead to abandonment of your site altogether which is NOT the point of having a website, is it?

I will test for broken links and fix them for you. I will also send a test through all of your contact pages asking for confirmation of it by whomever it is sent to. Sometimes contact forms just stop working for unknown reasons. It could be on the hosting provider’s side or the plugin that is being used or it could be ending up in your spam folder all of a sudden and you’ve missed out on a potential sale. A lot of folks fail to test these things, but having been a business owner myself, I know the importance of making sure these items are in good working order.

What it is:

Your website is sitting on a server at a hosting provider’s site. Most providers these days offer at least a 99% uptime, meaning that your site should be accessible to anyone 99% of the time. We all know that computers aren’t perfect and sometimes they need to be rebooted or hardware fails. However, there are other providers who do NOT offer an uptime guarantee which needs to be taken into consideration when choosing one.

How it benefits you:

If your site goes down for some reason, don’t rely on your provider to jump on it immediately. It’s not THEM losing money or customers, it’s you! Keeping informed by having a plugin installed on your site that monitors uptime, I’m informed when your site is down. Should it be down for more than a few minutes during prime time, I will contact the hosting provider personally to find out what’s wrong. This often gets the ball moving if they don’t know about it yet which saves you time getting back online and impacting your customers.

Why you need it:

For plans Executive and Power User, I will monitor your server’s uptime and if it is down (during my normal waking hours) for longer than 30 minutes, I will either call, chat or email the provider on your behalf to find out the status. I will also keep track of how long and how many times it went down during the month. If you feel that a different provider is warranted due to excessive downtime, we can discuss your options.

What it is:

For the Power User plan, I will review every page on your site each month looking for errors and opportunities for updating information and graphics to keep it fresh.

How it benefits you:

By staying current and changing things on your site keeps your visitors interested and coming back for more. Nobody wants to see the same thing on a website each time they go there. Should your visitors really like your content, there’s a higher chance they’ll share that with their friends. This nets you more customers and higher profits.

Why you need it:

Some people like to make changes to their own website but often need a second set of eyes to catch typos or making sure the information is clearly written. It’s easy to let images get “stale,” so often it’s a good idea to introduce new images to keep repeating visitors interested. Keeping your site up to date and correct is essential if you want to keep moving forward. I’m happy to suggest new images or text for you to add!

What it is:

When you have a hosting account, you will probably get many notification emails from them about various topics. Typically they will email you about expiring services, updates available, newsletters and tech support issues. WordPress also sends the admin many messages throughout the month. Those can include comments awaiting moderation (which can be spam comments), plugin updates, WordPress updates, new user notification, login attempts, contact form inquiries, etc.

How it benefits you:

It can take a lot of time and technical knowledge to wade through emails that come from your hosting provider, website or WordPress. If you are busy with 20 other things throughout the day, these can easily be overlooked. I can intercept these types of emails and notifications for you, saving you time and money.

Why you need it:

Emails are easily overlooked when you don’t fully understand what they mean and often they can be important. You probably have enough emails to deal with, so for the Power User plan, I will receive all of these emails on your behalf and determine what needs to be done with them. I will act on them as they come through during the month.

What it is:

Your plan is allotted a certain amount of hours per month for a flat fee. All of the services stated for your plan will be performed first and the time will be recorded. If there is time left over, you are free to use that remaining time as you wish for other services until that time runs out.

For example, if you buy the Executive plan which allots 4 hours of time per month and the services stated take 3 hours, you can use that remaining hour for whatever service I offer. If that task cannot be completed within the remaining time, you can buy extra hours at a discounted price. Time is always rounded to the quarter hour. Unused time does not rollover to the next month.

How it benefits you:

If you’re swimming with the big fish, then your business is always evolving. Instead of being cornered into only doing what your maintenance plan states, YOU get the choice of what you’d like to have performed. Tell me about holiday specials you’d like promoted or creation of a coupon code. Need a newsletter this month? No problem! Want me to post on your Facebook and website…I can do that. Value for money is what you get with this plan.

Why you need it:

This is a value added benefit to your monthly plan. You should get as much for your money as you can which is why I believe in offering this special service. Depending on how many updates and testing needs to be done during the month, the time spent on stated services can vary. Most companies who offer a monthly maintenance plan will try to work as little time as possible to get the most from your investment. There will be months where I spend longer on your site than what you’ve paid for, without you having to pay extra for it. There may be months where I don’t spend as long, which gives you the freedom to use that time you’ve purchased for anything you’d like. I have not seen any other company offer this before.

Services can be things like:

  • Anything on the Services Page
  • Updating text
  • Adding/removing photos
  • Searching for stock photos to use
  • Creating a Google Business page
  • Updating social media pages like Facebook, TripAdvisor, Google+, etc.
  • Helping with an Adwords campaign
  • Changing your menu structure or adding new items to it
  • Creating new pages or posts to add to your site
  • Creating a new logo or graphic
  • Setting up a newsletter
  • Help on creating a blog post
  • Editing your own work
  • Plus much more! If you can think it up, I can do it!

What it is:

If you prefer to have me work by the hour, you can purchase time depending on how long your request may take. The hourly rate is stated on the plan page.

How it benefits you:

If you like to save money, this is perfect for you. By buying this option, you still get all of the great service and features at a discount. No need to worry about paying an extra bill at the end of the month either. Buy it now and forget about it! Your account will be credited for the time purchased and can be used whenever you want!

Why you need it:

This special rate is only valid when purchased before services are rendered which saves you money from the standard hourly rate. Use the time however you’d like! Let’s talk about what you need done whether it be creating graphics for social media or your site, explanation and/or documentation on how to use the management console, helping create a newsletter and so much more!

I have done most of my work within WordPress, although before that platform became popular, I used Dreamweaver and Front Page. I don’t own those programs anymore, however so therefore cannot assist in sites built with those. I have worked in Wix, Weebly and Open Cart. If you need assistance with a program other than WordPress, please contact me and we can discuss it!
